Harewell Woods

Hi Folks, Liz has kindly suggested a new site near Glasshouses.

The entrance is at approx. SE 17432 63876 at the north side of the wood.
The footpath going SE from the Bridge over the Nidd and leading to the entrance of the woods is metalled.
Not sure of the parking - it's all a bit muddy at the moment - but there seems to be a few options so I don't think it'll be a problem.
The wall is at the south side of the wood (approx. SE 17408 63757)

Map without makings

Parking somewhere near the orange blob, and the wall is the red highlighted line.

Entrance to the site, and 2 possible parking places?

It's a very nice spot near Guisecliff and it seems to be where they run an outdoor school.

The wall is in a pretty bad state, it's on a slight incline but nothing too arduous. There is some stone laying about, and digging might yield some more but it isn't overly blessed, meaning a rebuild would probably result in quite a short wall.

The main problem is the amount of trees growing in the wall. Liz has offered to cut them down, but I think they would also need their stumps removing - not a small job, added to the fact that it seems a shame to cut down so many trees. There doesn't seem to be much scope for building round the trees, and even if there were it requires a lot more stone to do this. One option would be to build a smout/lunky type affair over the trees (which have a enough of a lean on them to allow for this) - but I doubt there is enough suitable stone to do more than a couple of these.

If that all seems a little bit negative I do like the site and it would be good if we can think of a way round the problems.
Opinions and suggestions humbly requested.

Photos

Taken in the field to South of woods facing North. The wall is to the left of the gate. Many of those trees are growing into the wall.

All the ones below are taken from the wood side facing South - in general going from East to West

As you can see there is a lot of growth in the wall.

  1. Parking is the more metalled type surface in photo 3 - white water container/blue looking thing. The muddy bit has frequent amounts of soil/rubble being dumped and not same land owner! So avoid parking on here.
Alternative at farmhouse (Harewell Woods Farmhouse - 1847 above door) - two spaniels will bark but are in a dog run so wont bother you.
We do have some stone at the barn (behind the pizza ovens left over from a previous job, and/or some spare stone (about a pallet load) at the farmhouse if more needed.
Happy to offer chainsaw - or if needed a farmer might help pull the odd tree stump out.
