Eastwoods Farm, near Bryans Wood - Wednesday 21 October 2015

A return to the “Cup and Rings” site.  We were last here in July 2014 when we unearthed another cup and ring stone. This resulted in work being halted whilst English Heritage were consulted.

The tape measure is extended to 12" to indicate the size
The advice from English Heritage is that the stone should now be built into the wall.

Today’s team consisted of Barry, Catriona, Graham, Paul, Richard H, Roderick and Tony. . We were also supported by Phil Dolphin (Master Waller) courtesy of the Upper Nidderdale Landscape Partnership.  Phil will be providing advice and guidance on our walling technique.

Our task is to create two wall ends, leaving a sufficient opening to allow cattle to pass through. This hopefully will  divert the cattle away from the current gap which has the  exposed “cup-and-ring” stone.

A  start is made on defining the line of the wall

The ““cup-and-rings” stone is ready to be placed in the wall

The mid-morning break

The two wall ends begin to take shape under the watchful eyes of Phil

At close of play

Above Thrope Plantation - Lofthouse

Graham, Catriona, Rod and I (Richard) set off for a bright and cold day of walling. We were joined later in the morning by Paul, but there was no appearance by David the farmer with Ice cream to further lower the temperature.
