Nidderdale Way near Longside

Catriona, and a couple of Richards met on Wednesday morning to finish the wall end at Longside. The spirits were warm and sunny whilst the weather was muggy and damp.

The object achieved Richard the elder decided a spot of show jumping was in order, just to test the strength of the build.

We present a mid leap shot here; the after shot is too upsetting to publish.

P.S. No Richards were actually harmed in the making of this wall, the dismount received a 10 out of 10

Nidderdale Way at Longside - Wednesday 1st July 2015

With a temperature at 31C and thunderstorms on their way, Barry and Tony decided to brave an outing to the wall at Longside.  The wall end was originally due to be rebuilt but had recently suffered further damage from a tree fall.

The task ahead

By the time coffee break was called we just had the wall end to take down

Heritage Skills Dry Stone Walling Event at Heathfield Caravan Park - Wednesday 10th June 2015

At today’s event there were four participants keen to learn about the history and features of dry stone walling, before heading out for a hands-on-walling session.

First they listened  to Kev Cale’s account of the history and archaeology of walling in Nidderdale, It was amazing to learn that the sandstone and gritstone that we would be walling with today, original started life 320 million years ago in Norway.  Tony then outlined the work of the AONB Walling Group and explained the techniques and processes involved in dry stone walling.

In view of the sunny and warm conditions outside, it was decided to take our buffet lunch up to the walling location above the caravan site. Prior to letting our guests start their walling experience, they were given a health and safety briefing and an explanation on the use of tools and equipment to be used.

The NAWG team in support was Barry, Richard H, Roderick and Tony.

Many thanks go to Denise and Stuart of Heathfield Caravan Park for preparing the indoor location and to Leanne for providing the display equipment and buffet lunch.

The indoor presentation was held in the old Heathfield Smelt Mill now used as the sports hall
