Nidderdale Way near Longside

Catriona, and a couple of Richards met on Wednesday morning to finish the wall end at Longside. The spirits were warm and sunny whilst the weather was muggy and damp.

 

The object achieved Richard the elder decided a spot of show jumping was in order, just to test the strength of the build.

We present a mid leap shot here; the after shot is too upsetting to publish.

P.S. No Richards were actually harmed in the making of this wall, the dismount received a 10 out of 10

Nidderdale Way at Longside - Wednesday 1st July 2015

With a temperature at 31C and thunderstorms on their way, Barry and Tony decided to brave an outing to the wall at Longside.  The wall end was originally due to be rebuilt but had recently suffered further damage from a tree fall.

Nidderdale Way at Longside - Wednesday 13 & 20 May 2015

Following a break due to bad weather and non-availability of wallers, we returned to complete Gap 4.

On 13th May, Graham and his son Rogan were able to spend the morning adding a further course.

On 20th May a team of six (Catriona, Graham, Paul, Roderick, Richard and Tony) were back in action.

The end of the wall at the edge of the old quarry gorge. This has now suffered further damage due to a fallen tree. A future task maybe.

Next week on 27th May we commence our preparation of the wall at the Heathfield Caravan Park for the Heritage Skills Dry Stone Walling Event to be held on 10th June.

Nidderdale Way at Longside

Barry, Roderick and I wended our way up to the second Longside wall for a sunny day gaping. The sun shone, the sheep were absent and the stone was very heavy and awkward so an altogether splendid time was had by all.

Nidderdale Way at Longside

After a hectic start to the year, where we managed precisely no walling, six stoic wallers made their way to the heights of Nidderdale and despite the biting cold rather fine progress was made, so much so that the site was clear of people by two and a quarter hours past the midday. Four of our wallers made quick work of the main gap. Whilst the other two managed to turn quite small gaping jobs into quite large gaping jobs with the aid of injudicious  stone removal and gravity, but still managed to hop it back down to their cars before the school run had started. Here are the results in photographic form.

Nidderdale Way at Longside - Wednesday 17 December 2014

The plan for today was to raise the height of the first gap and at 12 noon retire to the Crown Inn in Lofthouse for the NAWG “Christmas Drinks”.  With that incentive the team of five (Barry, Graham, Paul, Roderick and Tony) worked with great enthusiasm.

As 12 noon approached it was time to reinstate the stock proof fencing before departing 

Here is a preview of the remaining work on this stretch of wall, to be tackled after the Christmas break  (the next walling day is scheduled for 7 Jan 2015).

Nidderdale Way at Longside - Wednesday 3 December 2014

After cancelling last week due to wet weather, we return with a team of seven (Barry, Catriona, Graham, Paul, Richard H, Roger and Tony).  Today’s task was to complete the cheek end and make a start on the first gap. We were fortunate that the landowner had delivered additional stone to make our task that much easier.

 Like all gap repairs we end up with a much longer stretch to rebuild than expected
